چکیده

We have conducted near-infrared (Jand H-band) surface photometry for two early type barred galaxies, NGC 3412 and NGC 3941. The bulges of NGC 3412 and NGC 3941 show isophotal twists which indicate that they are triaxial. NGC 3412 has a very short bar and its bulge is more centrally concentrated than that of NGC 3941. The unusually short bar and the centrally concentrated triaxial bulge of NGC 3412 might be the result of bar dissolution. The colors of the nuclear region of NGC 3941 resemble those of the blue nuclei, implying the presence of young stellar populations.

Multicomponent Decompositions for a Sample of S0 galaxies

We have estimated the bulge-to-total (B/T ) light ratios in the Ks-band for a sample of 24 S0, S0/a and Sa galaxies by applying a 2-dimensional multicomponent decomposition method. For the disk an exponential function is used, the bulges are fitted by a Sérsic’s R function and the bars and ovals are described either by a Sérsic or a Ferrers function. In order to avoid non-physical solutions, pr...

When Is a Bulge Not a Bulge ? Inner Disks Masquerading as Bulges in NGC 2787 and NGC 3945

We present a detailed morphological, photometric, and kinematic analysis of two barred S0 galaxies with large, luminous inner disks inside their bars. We show that these structures, in addition to being geometrically disk-like, have exponential profiles (scale lengths ∼ 300–500 pc) distinct from the central, non-exponential bulges. We also find them to be kinematically disk-like. The inner disk...

Establishing the Connection between Peanut-shaped Bulges and Galactic Bars

It has been suggested that the peanut-shaped bulges seen in some edge-on disk galaxies are due to the presence of a central bar. Although bars cannot be detected photometrically in edge-on galaxies, we show that barred potentials produce a strong kinematic signature in the form of double-peaked line-of-sight velocity distributions with a characteristic “figure-ofeight” variation with radius. We...

Ngc 4608 and Ngc 5701: Barred Galaxies without Disks?

We have performed for the first time in the literature a 2D structural analysis on the barred lenticular and face–on galaxies NGC 4608 and NGC 5701. The results indicate that these galaxies either have never had large disks or their disks were almost completely destroyed by their strong bars, due to secular evolution processes. We discuss these surprising conclusions checking for signs of secul...

The panoramic integral-field spectrograph SAURON is currently being used to map the stellar kinematics, gaseous kinematics, and stellar populations of a large number of early-type galaxies and bulges. Here, we describe SAURON observations of cold stellar disks embedded in spheroids (NGC 3384, NGC 4459, NGC 4526), we illustrate the kinematics and ionization state of large-scale gaseous disks (NG...
